How to be linked from the KU Web site

The KU Web site offers an organizational structure for information provided by departments, offices, and organizations across campus. To be linked from the KU Web site all you need to do is follow these simple steps.

1. Obtain an account or run a Web server

Your department, office, or organization will need access to a computer system to host your Web site. You may

  • Get an account on RAVEN , the Academic Computing Services (ACS) system;
  • Get an account on a KU departmental system; OR
  • Run your own server, if you have direct access to the KU campus Ethernet backbone and can keep the server active 24 hours a day.

If your department, office, or organization wants to apply for an account on one of the ACS systems, you will need an ACS account form. ACS account forms are available from System Access (204 Computer Center) or by calling 864-0439 or e-mailing tbateson@ku.edu.

Campus and student organizations that want to apply for an ACS account need to

  • Be sure they are currently registered with the Student Organizations and Leadership Development Center (400 Kansas Union);
  • Take completed ACS account forms to Aaron Quisenberry for approval (Student Organizations and Leadership Development Center 400 Kansas Union);
  • Return the approved ACS account form to System Access; AND
  • Remember to renew the organization account through System Access each year

Remember that your organization is responsible for proper use of its computing resources.

2. Create a Web site

Once you have an account or are running a Web server, create your Web site. If you need help learning how to create a Web site, consult Academic Computing Services or take one of their many free workshops and seminars.

University Relations maintains a Web Image Library of various KU images that you may use on your Web site. You should contact University Relations if your department wants to provide information about course work and degree requirements. (785) 864-3256

Accessible templates are also available for use by KU offices and departments. Visit http://www.ku.edu/site/how/ for more information.

3. Include standard information on your

Web site

Display conspicuously on every page of your Web site

  • A "mailto" link (e-mail address) to the Web site contact person for questions or comments
  • The URL of the Web page
  • Date the file was last modified
Including the phone number (with appropriate area code) and postal mailing address for your department, office, or organization on your Web site is also highly recommended. Many users look for this information online.

Also consider including a link on your Web site to the KU Web site (http://www.ku.edu/). If your Web site is for a department, consider a link to the department's school or college.

4. Review and understand your responsibilities
