Enriching your extracurricular experiences with technology
Whether you will be a full- or part-time student, living on campus or commuting, the school’s social, extracurricular, and career services activities will be an important part of your educational experience. Find out about the technology tools that facilitate different communities on campus, allowing for communication, personal development, and getting together (in person and virtually).
Accessing computer services
- What public access for computing is available to students?
Although most students bring their own computers with them, KU also provides one computer for approximately every 20 enrolled undergraduates. These are accessible in 27 public computer labs across campus.
- Does the campus provide institutional e-mail accounts for all students and use e-mail as an official medium of communication?
Yes.
- Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student Web pages?
Yes. The university provides each student with 20 megabytes of disk space for personal Web space and file storage; details are available on the KU Online Service page. Free classes on building a personal Web site also are available; details are available on the Information Technology's training page.
In addition to personal Web space, KU provides each student with 20 MB of storage space through the briefcase function on the Kyou portal for convenient online storage and retrieval of other documents.
Connecting with others
- Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?
Contact information for students, faculty, and staff is available through the People Search page on the university's Web site. For their own privacy, students have the option of not having their information listed.
- What social activities and services are available online?
KU’s Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success provides a wide range of student services, including legal services, counseling & psychological services, services for students with disabilities, and multicultural resources. For regular updates through their Kyou student portal account, KU students may choose to customize a list of student organizations from which they would like to get announcements.
Information on student employment opportunities at KU and career counseling in preparation for graduation is described on KU’s Employment Web page.
Student Union Activities (SUA) coordinates activities and events for the student unions. SUA coordinates guest speakers, live music and fine arts events, films recreational activities and more throughout the academic year.
- Are there Web sites for student organizations and clubs?
Yes. Many KU student organizations and clubs maintain their own Web sites. These are included and linked with a listing of all registered student organizations on the KU’s Student Organizations page.
Other details are available on the web site of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center (SILC), which oversees KU’s fraternities and sororities, student leadership development programs, and registered student organizations and clubs. The SILC is also home to the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center, Men's Outreach Programs, the University Events Committee, and resources for nontraditional students and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.
Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use? No.
- What technology-supported career-planning services are available for students?
The University Career Center, located in the Burge Union, uses the Simplicity software program to collaborate with students on managing resumes, on-campus interviews and more. The University Career Center includes KU Career Counseling and Planning Services, where students take the following computerized assessments in conjunction with individual career counseling to interpret and maximize on the results:
• FOCUS II - A self-paced computerized career exploration program that assists students in making career-decisions.
• The Strong Interest Inventory
• Myers-Briggs Type Indicators
