The chancellor is the chief executive officer
of the University of Kansas. The provost, who is an executive vice
chancellor, is the chief academic officer; an executive vice chancellor
directs the Medical Center; vice provosts and vice
chancellors oversee student success, academic affairs, outreach, research
and facilities management, among other divisions.
Administration
The chief executive officer of the University of Kansas is Chancellor Robert
Hemenway, who oversees all campuses and reports to the Kansas Board of
Regents. Branching out from the chancellor's office are separate administrative
structures at the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses; those executive
vice chancellors report to Chancellor Hemenway. Government Relations
also reports to the chancellor.
On the Lawrence campus, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere
has a dual role as chief operations officer and chief academic officer. He
oversees all academic, research and public service and the units that support
those activities.
At the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara Atkinson is
chief operating officer and also the executive dean of the School of Medicine.
Robert M. Clark is vice chancellor and dean of the KU Edwards Campus, whose degree and certification
programs serve the educational needs of working adults in metropolitan Kansas City.
James P. Pottorff Jr. is the University general counsel. His office on the Lawrence
campus also serves the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
Director Lynn Bretz oversees KU's public relations, communications, and marketing efforts including the offices of University Relations and Kansas Public Radio.
Governance
The Lawrence campus has a unified system of governance for faculty, students and classified and
unclassified professional staff. Each group has its own senate or board and elected members, and
elected officers deal with issues specific to that group. Each group also participates, with
voting rights, in the University Council; this policy-making body, overseen by an elected
executive committee, has responsibility for academic policy and other campus issues.
The Medical Center governing bodies are the Faculty Assembly and the Student Government Council.
The Faculty Assembly, a joint body consisting of faculty from each school, is concerned with defining
educational goals, objectives, programs and policies and planning and developing faculty and support for research.
